Two Police Officers Are Killed By Gunmen At An Enugu Checkpoint

The police officers were caught off guard when the armed thugs, who were there in large groups and driving SUVs, suddenly started shooting at them.
A checkpoint in Enugu was stormed by gunmen, who killed two officers in the process.

The incident occurred on Sunday as Uwani Division officers were performing a regular stop and search along Campus Gate Road near Kenyatta Market in Enugu.

According to a statement from Enugu Police spokesman Daniel Ndukwe, “Many of the hoodlums escaped with various degrees of fatal gunshot wounds in the subsequent gun duel, while two of the operatives, who sustained severe gunshot wounds, were moved to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead and their corpses deposited in the mortuary for preservation.”

The armed hoodlums in their numbers and operating in SUVs suddenly opened fire on the police officers, taking them unawares, the image maker added.He noted that vehicles the hoodlums came with have been recovered and a manhunt to arrest for their arrest has been launched.

The miscreants abandoned the black Mercedes Benz ML 350 4Matic Jeep they utilized for the operation at Enugu/Port-Harcourt Road, Enugu, as a result of the manhunt for the attackers being immediately begun. The blood-stained and gunshot-damaged vehicle has been located. According to the preliminary investigation, which indicates that at least two of the hoodlums were neutralized, the recovery of the vehicle and the signs thereof are corroborated, the statement continued.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Ammani, FDC, has instructed tactical and operational operatives of the Command to continue the ongoing manhunt operation and has issued a warning that anything less than finding and apprehending the attackers will not be tolerated in order to make up for the unfortunate loss of the two operatives.

The state’s citizens are also being urged by the commissioner to provide the police with vital information that would facilitate the capture of the offenders. Also, he asked proprietors of medical facilities to contact the police immediately if they saw anyone, dead or living, with gunshot wounds.
