Sanctioned Russian Central Banker Appointed to IMF’s Board

The current holder of the office announced on Tuesday that a sanctioned central banker will represent Russia on the board of the Washington-based International Monetary Fund.

Ksenia Yudaeva is a former first deputy governor of Russia’s central bank and a current adviser to its governor, Elvira Nabiullina.

Yes, I confirm. “Ksenia will be the Russian Executive Director at the IMF beginning November 1,” said Aleksei Mozhin in an email to AFP, confirming reports by Russian news agencies TASS and RIA.Mozhin has held the position since 1996, making him the longest-serving member of the Fund’s Executive Board.

Yudaeva was targeted by the first round of sanctions imposed by Washington on April 20, 2022, two months after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine.

Her presence on the US sanctions list is due to her roles at both the Russian Central Bank and the Otkritie commercial bank, according to the State Department.

In theory, US sanctions ban the individuals in question from accessing US territory, despite the fact that the IMF’s offices are in Washington, the federal capital.

They also freeze all assets owned by the individuals in question, directly or indirectly, in the United States, and prohibit any American corporation or citizen from conducting commercial or financial dealings with them.
