Rwanda’s ruling alliance wins the most seats in parliament

Rwanda’s ruling coalition had the most seats in the legislative election, with President Kagame’s Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) continuing to dominate with more than 62% of the vote.

Other historic parties, most notably the Liberal Party and the Social Democratic Party, earned approximately 11% and 9% of the votes, respectively.

Parties affiliated with the RPF, some of whose leaders are ministers, backed President Paul Kagame during the presidential campaign and accompanied him to his campaign gatherings.

The two factions outside the coalition and its supporters, PS Imberakuri and the Democratic Green Party, received slightly more than 5% of the vote, meeting the minimum requirement for seats in Parliament.

Following these proportional representation elections, the assembly’s composition is projected to remain relatively stable compared to that elected in 2018.

The election commission has not yet released the distribution of deputies by political party.

According to provisional results from Rwanda’s presidential election on Monday, President Paul Kagame received 99% of the vote, an outcome largely expected as the country’s long-time ruler seeks to extend his three-decade reign.

Kagame’s opponents, Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana, received less than 1% of the vote in provisional results, accounting for 79% of all ballots cast.
