Police Quiz Sowore on Viral Extortion Video Incident
Omoyele Sowore, a rights activist, was quizzed on Monday at Abuja’s Force Intelligence Bureau about a recent viral extortion video involving certain police personnel.
In the video, Sowore claimed that the officers were engaging in criminal activity on the Murtala Muhammed Airport Road in Lagos.
In the video, Sowore got into a fight with several of the police officers who stopped a car transporting him to Lagos’ airport and asked the driver to park.
The viral video elicited numerous reactions, prompting the authorities to summon him for additional questioning.
Sowore arrived at the Force Intelligence Bureau with his lawyers and a few supporters who sang solidarity songs.
Monday’s visit was not Sowore’s first meeting with police and other security forces. In September 2024, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate for 2023 was “briefly detained” at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport for his apparent involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protests that erupted in August.
Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court Abuja dismissed the Federal Government’s treasonable felony charges against the convener of the #RevolutionNow protest in February 2024, after the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, filed a notice of discontinuance with the court.
