Oyo APC, PDP Spokesperson on Makinde’s 2027 Campaign

As the political landscape for the 2027 presidential election begins to take shape, a campaign calling for Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to run for president has emerged.
This initiative, spearheaded by the group ‘Progressive Youth for Makinde Presidency 2027,’ is gaining steam in Ibadan and on social media platforms.
The campaign began in June 2024, with the creation of dedicated social media profiles on Facebook and X (previously Twitter) to advocate for Makinde’s candidacy.

According to Punch, the Facebook account was formed on June 17, followed by the X account on June 3.

These forums have actively promoted Makinde’s leadership abilities and governance achievements, establishing him as a viable candidate for Nigeria’s highest office.

Olamilekan Kehinde, a prominent supporter, expressed confidence in Makinde’s ability, stating, “Governor Seyi Makinde has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities and a commitment to good governance, making him fit for the presidency of Nigeria compared to the current President, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.”

Despite gaining popularity, political circles have had different reactions. The All Progressives Congress (APC) criticized the effort as having no serious motive, with a spokeswoman labeling the supporters “clowns.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, on the other hand, dismissed the campaign as mere speculation, claiming that Governor Makinde has made no declaration of candidacy for president.

Governor Makinde’s spokesperson, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, declined to comment on the topic, remaining silent on the governor’s probable presidential ambitions.
