NHRC Calls for Justice in Alleged Mass Killings in Nigeria

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has demanded justice and responsibility for civilians reportedly killed by Nigerian Army operations in the Abisari town of Borno State.

Kemi Okonyedo, a member of the NHRC Governing Council, made the demand while presenting the army with the investigating panel’s report on human rights breaches in counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.

The investigation had vindicated the military of coercive systemic abortions administered on women, but indicted them of deliberately killing civilians in the Abasari hamlet.

Okonyedo demands that those harmed be paid.

“The killing of civilians in Abisari remains a grave violation that requires justice, accountability, and immediate action,” she stated.

“These are not abstract issues; they are real. Lives are affected, families exist, and communities are still hurting, which must be acknowledged and treated.

“The panel’s recommendations establish a road map for correcting these crimes, holding perpetrators accountable, and preventing such violations in the future.

“Among the panel’s key recommendations is compensation for the victims of the Abisari killings with the Federal Government ensuring that the families and communities affected are provided adequate reparations.”
