How Switching to Nigeria Transformed My Career – Ademola Lookman

Ademola Lookman, Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Atalanta striker, has cited his switch from representing England to playing for the Super Eagles in 2022 as the key to his subsequent success at both club and international levels.

Lookman, who was born in London and helped England win the Under-17 World Cup, has emerged as one of Africa’s best footballers after making the switch.
“I think ever since I put on the Super Eagles jersey, it’s been fruitful,” Lookman told SportyTV.

“As a team, we’ve accomplished a lot and continue to do so. But the camaraderie among the squad members is something special.”

Lookman’s career took a drastic change after joining the Super Eagles, going from a Premier League player struggling to rediscover his form to one of Africa’s most famous footballers.

His progress culminated in his being elected the CAF Men’s Player of the Year on December 16, 2023, becoming the first Nigerian born outside the country to receive the prestigious honour.

In less than two years with Nigeria, Lookman has not only made an impact on the international scene, but has also thrived at club level.

Lookman’s influence continued this season, with 12 goals and 5 assists in 19 games, cementing his status as a top-tier forward.

Lookman has made significant contributions to Nigeria, particularly in the qualifiers for the 35th Africa Cup of Nations, where he scored twice in a crucial win.

His performances have followed in the footsteps of other diaspora-born players such as Osaze Odemwingie and Victor Moses, who provided comparable enthusiasm to the Super Eagles.

“To me, it’s an incredible moment,” Ademola Lookman remarked about his CAF Awards victory.
“An great accomplishment. It’s an honor to be among the many great players who have made significant contributions to the game, legends.”

The forward also stated that his individual accomplishments are part of a broader movement

“It’s not just me but we have a lot of talent, not just in the men’s game but also in the women’s game, and for us to be able to give motivation to the young kids who want to aspire to be like us is the most important, because if we can set a good example, they have good footsteps to walk into.”
Lookman’s continuing rise indicates that the Super Eagles have discovered a new star, one whose quest of self-discovery and success has inspired both his squad and the next generation of Nigerian footballers.
