Ghana Inmate Dies at Brazil Airport: A Tragic Incident

A 39-year-old immigrant from Ghana passed away while undergoing detention at São Paulo, Brazil’s Guarulhos International Airport.

Following treatment at the airport, the guy passed away on August 13. The reason of death has not yet been made public.

According to a Reuters report, the migrant was one of several “inadmissible travellers” detained un a restricted section of the airport due to their absence of the required paperwork or permits to enter Brazil.

These people have been imprisoned in a location with little access to basic amenities including food, water, and restrooms. The Public Defender’s Office of Brazil has denounced these circumstances as grave breaches of human rights, citing the depreciating health of those detained.

This is happening as the Brazilian government gets ready to implement more stringent entry requirements meant to stop migrants from utilizing Brazil as a transit country to countries like the US and Canada.

Beginning on Monday, visitors from other countries who do not have a Brazilian visa are required to either return home or proceed straight to their final destination. It’s unclear if the migrants being held at Guarulhos International Airport will be subject to these new regulations.
