The Controversy of Portable’s ‘King of the Streets’ Title

Fans of controversial musician Okikiola Habeeb, often known as Portable, were surprised when he was voted the ‘King of the Streets’ at a recent celebration.

Portable wore a white outfit to the occasion, which featured several traditional rulers of Ore, Ondo town, and was flanked by similarly decked monarchs.

In internet footage, one of the traditional rulers welcomed the artist to the guests by placing a green and white crown on his head. The words “King of the Streets” were inscribed on the crown. Portable was also given various presents in addition to this honor, while a large throng roared in joy of the crowning.

Since acquiring the title, Portable has been visibly overjoyed, posting videos of himself dancing and celebrating his newfound royal position. However, many followers resorted to social media to challenge the legitimacy of his crowning.

An Instagram user identified as The Conformist replied, “Wow! Congratulations to a king without a kingdom,” while another user, Chyddo, lamented, “Money has completely wrecked the world; nothing is given on merit or dignity anymore. “Just have money and watch the elders bow to your toes.”

Tynoni voiced concern about the purity of tradition, saying, “Tradition is compromised.”

Sebastian Sylvester inquired, “What political position is this? “Where is this recognized in Nigeria?”

Another netizen, Merit Frames, said, “This is why most of us don’t respect traditional authorities because this is nonsense.”

In contrast, several supporters praised Portable, with Official MDG stating that “Portable has done a lot of good things for the people of Sango Ota.”
