Gov Kefas Urges TSU Lecturers to Return to Negotiation

On Thursday, Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas urged striking Taraba State University (TSU) academics to sheathe their swords and return to the negotiating table.

Emmanuel Bello, Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communications, made the announcement in a statement.

He added that the Academic Staff Union of University, TSU chapter, declared an indefinite strike on Thursday due to a “breakdown in talks over demands.”

In a fast response, Governor Kefas urged them to reconsider their actions, stating that discussion remains the greatest choice for conflict resolution.

He praised the teachers for their previous understanding, but advised them to be patient because government is a slow process.

Kefas indicated that the state administration is working on all pending agreements and other related matters, and that the lecturers are still his partners in the quest to deliver free education.

The governor values professors’ contributions to shaping students’ futures.

Kefas underlined his commitment to meeting their expectations while also fostering a learning atmosphere within the university community.
In a related development, the university’s tuition fees were reduced by half, with the government covering the remaining balance for students. Students, parents, and stakeholders have hailed the decision as bold and timely,” according to the statement.

“In addition, substantial renovations were carried out in the female dorms and other areas of the institutions.

“Moreso, a commission of investigation into some of the difficulties affecting TSU was established under the chairmanship of former Speaker, Prof. Josiah Kente, to address the fundamental causes of the challenges. The panel’s report has now been submitted.”
