FG suspends plan to sell ₦40,000 rice bags to Nigerians

President Bola Tinubu’s government has halted the attempt to offer subsidized 50kg bags of food to civil officials for ₦40,000.
According to Naija News, Nigerians may now purchase 50kg sacks of rice for ₦40,000 at government-established centers across the country.
Muhammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, said the plan was one of several measures launched by President Tinubu’s administration to improve citizens’ living conditions.

A statement issued earlier this week by the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs, signed by the Ministry’s Director of Human Resources, Jaiyesimi Abimbola, stated that all interested public servants should fill out a Google form on the OHCSF website and submit it to the director of human resources for endorsement.

This plan, however, has been halted, according to a communique signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs (Human Resources Management Department) titled “Withdrawal of Internal Circular on Sale of Subsidized Rice to Public Servants.”

The circular was addressed to directors and department heads.

“I am directed to refer to our internal circular at the Ministry (Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs) dated August 1, 2024 on the aforementioned subject matter and to advise you that the Internal Circular is hereby withdrawn.

“Further information will be supplied in due course. Please distribute the contents of this internal circular to workers in your relevant Departments and Units for their information and direction,” the circular states.

However, no reason was provided for the plan’s removal, which will undoubtedly put many civil personnel who had registered for the discounted rice in limbo.
