Immigration suspends officer after alleged bribery

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended Okpravero Ufuoma, an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI II), for allegedly soliciting money from a traveler.

Kenneth Udo, a spokesman for the Service, said in a statement that the officer’s behavior, as documented in a video circulating on social media, does not reflect the NIS’s professional standards and ethics.

Udo stated that the Service received a viral video with the tagline ‘This is how Immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria’.

Kemi Nandap, Comptroller General of Immigration, strongly condemned the suspected misbehavior, claiming that it hindered existing reforms aimed at improving service standards.

She did, however, inform the public that the officer had been suspended indefinitely pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures, as required by law and Public Service Rules.

Nandap emphasized that the officer’s actions are disgraceful and do not reflect the service’s devotion to hospitality, greeting, and courtesy.
