FG Warns Against Foreign Interference in Protests

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has stated that the Federal Government (FG) will not tolerate any foreign meddling in the aftermath of the violence that accompanied the #EndBadGovernance rallies in the country.

He declared this on Wednesday during a meeting with members of the diplomatic corps in Abuja, warning that the government will not spare anyone who funds the protests, both within and outside Nigeria.

Tuggar stated, “While the government continues to work hard via various reform programs and initiatives to solve the difficulties confronting Nigeria and Nigerians, it is important to remember that no nation tolerates foreign involvement in its domestic affairs or those of its citizens. Nigeria is not the exception.

“The government would take appropriate action against any foreign entity residing in Nigeria that is found to have directly or indirectly supported the protesters by whatever means or seeks to interfere in the internal affairs of the country.”Nigeria cherishes and continues to value the cordial relationships that exist between her and your respective countries and organizations, and will do nothing to undermine or take for granted such relationships.

“Indeed, more than any time before now, we solicit your understanding and collaboration in the ongoing efforts of the Federal government in addressing the economic challenges confronting the country, to achieve a better life for every Nigerians at home and abroad.”

The minister began his speech by noting the government’s efforts to improve socioeconomic development, which he claims have resulted in a drop in debt servicing from 97% to 68%, as well as other measures to assure food security and create jobs and investments.
Ambassador Tuggar remarked that in recent days, harmful narratives have emerged on social media, jeopardizing the nation’s peace and stability.

He did, however, assure diplomats in the country that the Nigerian government was dedicated to protecting both members of the diplomatic corps and Nigerians in accordance with international law.

The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, as well as representatives from the National Security Adviser, the Inspector General of Police, parliamentarians, and others, attended the meeting.
