Over 200 houses are destroyed as floods devastate villages in Argungu, Kebbi

A catastrophic flood has wrecked the Argungu Emirate in Kebbi State, demolishing over 200 homes and displacing many locals.

The calamity struck after heavy rainfall on Saturday and Sunday morning, impacting villages in Bayawa, Tiggi, Fakon Sarki Settlement, and Karda Area of Argungu town.

The flood has left many people homeless, with some seeking temporary shelter in schools. The residents of Bayawa hamlet are currently accommodated at Bayawa Secondary School, while those from Fakon Sarki have been relocated to Magajin Rafi Model Primary School in Argungu’s new barracks area.

Residents of Tiggi village have also returned to the local high school seeking refuge.

Umar Tafida, Kebbi State’s Deputy Governor, went to the affected districts to evaluate the damage and give assistance.

He ordered a quick inspection of the affected homes and the creation of a list of victims and their lost property.

The deputy governor also ordered that people be evacuated to nearby schools for their own protection, as well as emergency help.

He also gave N5 million to each afflicted hamlet – Bayawa, Tiggi, and Fakon Sarki – as first assistance. He also contributed one million naira to the procurement of food and beverages for the displaced residents.
He also informed the victims that he would transmit a report of the incident to Nasir Idris, the state governor, in order to seek additional aid from the state and federal governments.
